4/10/26 ECEA Child Care Update

Public schools and nonprofit child care providers are typically exempt from property taxes.
Private, for-profit providers? They pay the full amount often tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.
That alone creates a massive competitive disadvantage.
Yet when governments roll out new public subsidies or programs to “help the child care industry,” they almost never address this fundamental unfairness. Instead of leveling the playing field for the entire mixed-delivery system, they pour more taxpayer money into programs that further benefit tax-exempt public schools and nonprofits, while for-profit providers continue carrying the full tax burden.
If public dollars are truly intended to support all families and all providers, then any new government initiative must first correct this imbalance. That means extending equivalent property tax relief to private operators. THEN providing support to all programs across the board.
Anything less isn’t equity — it’s just more subsidies for the favored players, dressed up as “help” for the whole industry.
Real solutions require fair rules, not excuses.
It’s time to stop tilting the scales against the private providers that so many families depend on.
Demand property tax fairness for all child care providers. Tell funders to PROVE IT!
