New Campaign for Property Tax Equity

ECEA can't spend $2M to change the Colorado constitution so that you don't have to pay property taxes.  We passed legislation to enable localities to do the right thing and they can only think in a short sighted way about their local budgets.  New tax initiatives are not even referencing the inequity in the system for private pay providers--having to pay as much as $250,000 a year in property taxes.  Any money they give you, still doesn't solve for the primary issue that is making it so difficult to operate in the child care space.....PROPERTY TAXES!  Non-profits have it waived, public schools don't have to pay (and actually benefit from your taxes) and you?  Well you pay...year after year you pay.  Then the state and every "advocacy" organization out there says, "Child care is too expensive."  They push to break the system, to then force the state/federal government to fund child care.  All the while, no one fixes the primary issue that makes child care so expensive...property taxes.

ECEA is standing up for you with our "Prove it!" Campaign.  You will see it a LOT going forward between now and the election.  The reality is, it doesn't matter how nice we play, private industry is never at the table to discuss how funding can be used.  We are not playing nice now.  We are going to do everything we can to say in advance...if you are asking the public for funding to help child care then your #1 action MUST BE that you pay private property taxes.  Then you can use the excess to support the industry as a whole.  ONLY WHEN THEIR IS INDUSTRY EQUITY CAN YOU BE TRULY SECURE AS A BUSINESS.

So, JOIN US!  Start talking about it.  "If the progressive/graduated tax passes, the first thing they must do is pay private property taxes."  They need to hear this everywhere they turn.  Post socially.  Write letters to the editors.  I will be using the information this week as we provide testimony against HB1292.  STOP the advantages for School Districts.  Level the playing field so that families can thrive!

Senator Brights CCCAP solutions bill is here.  It's SB26-180 .  The bill will provide stabilizing funding in the future but it will take some time before a draw of funds can come.  That does not provide immediate support for CCCAP providers.  It will be in Senate Finance on Thursday, and ECEA will be there to provide testimony. Here's a summary of recent and ongoing actions that has been taking...
